Can you Tickle yourself? Think about it. Although you can go through the motions, it's just not the same. At best, you might produce a sensation of slight quivers, but nothing that approaches a real tickle. Why not? Some scientists believe the tickling stimuli arise from non-self directed movement. If you try to tickle yourself, you know where your fingers are moving. In the segment, "A Ticklish Question," Alan Alda learns that our brains are actually programmed to ignore self-tickling so that our bodies won't jump in surprise every time we touch ourselves. But instead of reading about it, why not explore this ticklish situation with a hands-on approach?

In this show, you saw how scientists like Christine Harris are exploring the human reaction to tickling. But learning about something as common and everyday as tickling isn't limited to the domain of scientists and research laboratories. In this activity, you'll explore how knowing and directing a ticklish movement might effect its capacity to elicit a reaction.

OBJECTIVE
These activities will offer:

a hands-on experience during which you'll try to tickle yourselves
experiences that test how spoken and tactile directions may interfere with the tickle sensation

A Ticklish Subject

MATERIALS

Makeup pencil
Makeup remover
Paper and marker
Paper and pencil (to record your observations)

PROCEDURE

Part 1 - Tickling - Out of Control

Work with a partner - one person is the "researcher" and the other is the "subject".
As the researcher, ask your subject to remove his/her sock and shoe from one foot.
Ask the subject to try to tickle himself or herself by gently brushing fingers over the exposed arch in a manner that would elicit a tickling response in others.
Next, explore the tickling response by gently brushing your fingers over the subject's exposed arch.
Using a ruler as a guide, draws a 3" by 3" grid on a sheet of paper. Each grid line should have a separation distance of 1 inch = producing 9 equal sized squares. Over the top row, identify each column as A, B, and C. Along the left margin, identify each row as 1, 2, and 3.
Note how each box can be identified by a letter and number combination. A1 is the top left box. The center box is B2.
Uses a makeup pencil to reproduce a copy of this box on the exposed arch of your subject. The box drawn upon the skin must be created at the same size as this paper version.
Ignoring the line pattern, the researcher brushes a random pattern across the grid.

REMEMBER:
The random brush strokes cannot extend beyond the center of the outlying boxes as illustrated - the "area of allowable tickling."
Your subject should rate the ticklish stimulation on a scale of 1 to 10 and record it in their journal.
Place a finger at the center of any one of the boxes. Steadily, brush your finger against the skin in a controlled manned, from to the center of one adjoining box to the next. Again, your subject should rates this more controlled brush on a scale of 1 to 10.

Now move your finger around the grid more randomly, without moving box to adjoining box, but always remain within the "allowable area of tickling." Ask your subject should compares and contrasts the intensity of the tickle and record this in their laboratory journal.
Exchange roles with the subject and repeat the activity.

PART 2 - TICKLING - Audio Directed Paths

PROCEDURE

Ask your subject to hold the grid made in the previous activity and call out the identity of one of the squares. Lightly presses a finger in the center of that square.
The subject should identify a neighboring square. In response gently brush a straight line to the center of this square. Ask the subject to compare and contrast this self-directed movement to the random movement produced in the previous activity. The subject should rate the tickle stimuli on a scale of 1 to 10.
Ask the subject to call out a succession of box destinations, given just as the finger reaches the center of its intended box. This will create a continual and slow movement from box to box. Afterwards, ask the subject to compare the ticklish stimulus of this subject-directed movement to the researchers random movement from box center to box center, on a scale of 1 to 10.
Exchange roles and repeat the activity.

PART 3 - TICKLING - Tactile Directed Paths

Ask your subject should hold the grid paper in one hand so that both of you can see this grid. Ask the subject to use his/her other hand to point to a grid location and maintain continual contact between the fingertip and the paper.
As the subject points to the paper grid position, place a finger on the arch grid at that same location.
Keeping contact with the paper, the subject should slowly draw a path from box to box. Simultaneously, brush the same pattern onto the arch grid. Ask the subject to compare, contrast, and rate this tactile directed stimulation with the previous tickling methods.
Exchange roles and repeat the activity.

QUESTIONS

Was self-tickling experienced?
Why was the random tickling movements restricted to a certain area that was one half inch within the outer perimeter of the grid?
How did directing the tickle movement by spoken locations affect the tickle?
How did directing the tickle movement by drawing out movements by the subject's finger affect the tickle? Why?

CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF YOUR MODEL

Why does directing your own tickle movements reduce the tickling sensation? Did you and your partner have the same responses? Compare and contrast these trials performed by other classmates? Are some people more ticklish than others are? Can you uncover and personality or biological features that may influence a person's response to tickling?

EXTENSIONS

Can preoccupation with another thought affect your ability to be tickled? Think about it. Suppose you were in the midst of mathematical calculations. Would this thinking interfere with your brain's response to the potentially tickling stimuli? Design an experiment that would explore how preoccupation with other thoughts affects one's ability to be tickled. With your instructor's approval, perform the inquiry and share your results with the class.

TICKLED WITH YOUR OWN FINGER

Here's a challenge. Do you think that you can be tickled with your own finger if someone else controls its movements? To check this out, you'll need to relax enough so that your partner moves your finger without any resistance. First, remove your shoe and sock. Cross your legs so that your left foot extends horizontally across your right thigh. Have your partner sit on your right side. Let them take your right hand and hold it so that your index finger extends outward. Relax and give up control of your right arm, finger, and hand. Challenge your partner to tickle your exposed arch using your index finger. Can it be done? Even though you are not in control of the movements, does your body have automatic feedback that tells you where and what your body parts are doing?

Have you heard about the "Fish Pedicure" yet? CBS news did a news story on it a week ago, and personally, I find the whole idea rather creepy. Instead of getting a pedicure by an actual employee, you sit and soak your feet in a tub of warm water filled with garra rufa fish, which have no teeth. They suck off the dead skin, leaving your feet exfoliated and apparently amazingly soft. The cost? $45 for 15 minutes. If these fish are anywhere near as cheap as the fish at the pet store, they're getting a pretty good profit, don't you think? Those who have braved the treatment say that it first feels rather ticklish, but then as though your feet are asleep.

I am very ticklish. When I was little, it wasn’t a big deal, but now I’m close to becoming intimate with a guy, and I’m very nervous. I don’t want to scream and jump away every time he touches me. How can I overcome this?

answer:
One thing you could do is try to relax.The thing about ticklishness is that even though the physical sensation is entirely real, a lot of the sensitivity is actually in your head. In other words, if you know being touched may make you jump out of your skin, you’ll start squirming before anyone even lays a finger on you. A lot of it is nervousness, too. If you’re not used to being touched in a romantic situation, it makes sense that you’d feel tense and jumpy. Once you get used to it, you’ll probably calm down and be less ticklish.
But I know you need to figure out how to deal with the situation right now. One thing that might help is to remind yourself how much you like this guy and care about him. If you’re really into him, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be able to let go of your tenseness and let yourself be romantic and sexy. You might also want to be up-front with him. If he’s about to touch you, and you’re afraid you’re going to jump a mile in the air, try this: Gently grab his arm or hand (so you let him know that you aren’t mortally offended by his attempt to get closer) and say, “There’s something you should know about me. I’m so ticklish, I may have to join a convent.” That way you’ll break the tension, and he’ll know he’s not doing anything wrong. Then proceed as slowly as you need to. It may take a little while, but I suspect it’ll get easier all the time.

Residents, Police On The Lookout For Naked Tickler

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Police in New Smyrna Beach are searching for a burglar in the buff.

A naked man is once again breaking into homes and tickling women's feet. It has happened several times in the last five years.

The latest incident was Saturday morning in New Smyrna Beach. The victim told deputies she had fallen asleep at her home, on Katy Drive. When she woke up, the naked man was crouched behind the couch, tickling her foot.

The police report said when she screamed, the man dashed across the room with his hands over his private area, and ran away.

"She doesn't know if he's going to come back. She feels violated. He's been in her home," said resident Kathy Wright.

The victim said she had left the side door unlocked.

In History Chinese tickle torture is a term used in Western Society to imply an ancient form of torture practiced by the Chinese, in particular the courts of the Han Dynasty. Chinese tickle torture was a punishment for nobility since it left no marks and a victim could recover relatively easily and quickly. Another example of tickle torture was used in Ancient Rome, where a person’s feet are dipped in a salt solution, and a goat is brought in to lick the solution off. This type of tickle torture would only start as tickling, eventually becoming extremely painful

Consensual tickle torture
In the world of fetishism, tickle torture may be found as an activity between two partners. A torture session usually begins with one partner allowing the other to rope them up in a position that leaves parts of the body particularly sensitive to tickling vulnerable. Though many parts of the human body are deemed ticklish, tickle torture is commonly associated with the tickling of one's bare feet.

Evidence Of Tickle Torture
There are a small number of documented instances of tickle torture. They happened in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in these instances restrained victims were tickled upon the bare soles of their feet, apparently against their will and for the pleasure of their tormentors. There is currently no evidence that tickle torture was ever widespread or was practiced by governments. The very small amount of related documentation discovered thus far is all from England and America.

First, 'Orrible Murder: An Anthology of Victorian Crime and Passion Compiled from the Illustrated Police News (by Leonard De Vries, published by Book Club Associates in London in 1974) (pp 73–4) reissued a news item first published in the Illustrated Police News on December 11, 1869: 'A Wife Driven Insane by Husband Tickling Her Feet.' The account states that Michael Puckridge had previously threatened the life of his wife, described as "an interesting looking young woman." Puckridge tricked his wife into allowing herself to be tied to a plank. Afterward, "Puckridge deliberately and persistently tickled the soles of her feet with a feather. For a long time he continued to operate upon his unhappy victim who was rendered frantic by the process. Eventually, she swooned, whereupon her husband released her. It soon became too manifest that the light of reason had fled. Mrs. Puckridge was taken to the workhouse where she was placed with the other insane inmates." (page 74) The husband was given away by Mrs. Puckridge's niece who was aware of the torture and spoke to neighbors about it. The article does not say if Puckridge confessed his crime to the niece after the deed was done, or if the niece actually watched the feather relentlessly scraping away at her aunt's soles, and ultimately, her sanity.

Second, a Sunday, September 6, 1903, special to the New York Times included a small item on its first page (page 1, no byline), "Treated Patient Brutally." At the Hudson River State Hospital, one suicidal patient, John Hayes, was immobilized on a bed for his own safety. While he lay helpless, the patient's woes were multiplied by one of the hospital attendants, Frank A Sanders. "Sanders is said to have confessed that while intoxicated he amused himself by tickling the feet and ribs of Hayes and pulling his nose." (page 1) Sander's also gave his restrained victim a black eye. Another hospital employee came upon Sanders while he was entertaining himself at his patient's expense, and the criminal was brought before a grand jury.

The third instance of documentation is found in David Ker's New York Times article, "England in Old Times" (page 11 of New York Times, November 13, 1887), where Ker writes, "Gone, too, are the parish stocks, in which offenders against public morality formerly sat imprisoned, with their legs held fast beneath a heavy wooden yoke, while sundry small but fiendish boys improved the occasion by deliberately pulling off their shoes and tickling the soles of their defenseless feet."

Tickle torture in popular culture
The Howard Stern Show has had several women on the show getting tickle tortured. A villain from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles named Don Turtelli uses tickling as a method of interrogation, such as tickling Zack's bare soles with a feather. Jake Redder is a popular fetish artist whose artwork often depicts women being tickled on the soles of their feet. Olive Oyl's feet are mercilessly tickled against her will in the 1934 cartoon Shiver Me Timbers.Olive Oyl, the girlfriend of popular cartoon character Popeye, was twice tickle tortured in 1930s-era Popeye the Sailor cartoons, evidently to amuse her captors:

Shiver Me Timbers - Olive is tied down, with two dripping milk bottles hoisted over her bare feet. Two cats are then set free and begin licking her milk-drenched feet.

Bridge Ahoy! - Olive dangles upside down from the edge of a girder, secured only by her shoe clinging to the girder. Knowing she is helpless, Bluto then peels back the sole of her shoe, revealing her bare foot, and tickles her incessantly.

Joshua Falken is an adult 3D artist whose computer generated artwork often features tickling scenes.

In The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior, Mathayus passes through a series of torture chambers, and passes by a cell (which he does not seem to notice) with four boys chained to a wall and being tickle tortured by goats.

Why Do we Have Toes?

The problem really starts with our feet. They are not very good at what they do and there are all sorts of little bones and joints that can get broken, dislocated and sprained. There are also things like fallen arches to contend with, not to mention aching backs, hips, knees and ankles. It does not seem like we are all that well suited to walking upright. And our skin, even if heavily calloused, is no match for sharp rocks and pointy sticks. Throughout the animal kingdom examples of far more efficient designs of feet can be found. In fact the vast majority of feet out there are much better suited to walking around on that ours. And then there are the toes. One might believe that they are there to provide traction but they usually prove to be of little use, except on surfaces like sand or soft dirt, since they have no claws and are so prone toward injury. Throughout history people have sought to cover their toes to protect them, so traction does not seem to be an issue. Balance is a good point but a single large toe with only one joint would accomplish the same thing and not catch on things and break.

So what's with the toes anyway? Well they do kind of make our feet look a little like our hands. Hey, maybe that's it. Maybe our feet used to be just like our hands and they could grip things. There is a precedent for this idea (actually there are several. Chimps, gorillas and orangs spring to mind.) Could it be that something as simple (and I do mean simple) as evolution is responsible? But I was always told that man was made in the image of god. If that is true, then god doesn't walk around much and he (she or it) did not consider this when making beings that need to walk to get around. But that is not possible because god is omniscient and benevolent. Could it be some kind of punishment for our sins? Nope, Adam and Eve had toes before they did anything wrong, as do innocent newborn babies. Maybe it's a test to see if we are worthy. Of course, I could go on rationalizing forever and never arrive at a conclusion, or I could go with a theory that is backed up by all the evidence and has passed every test mankind has ever come up with. Simple evolution.

I hate having toes but take solace in the idea that in a couple of thousand generations, if we survive, humans will not have toes anymore.

Ticklish Pedicures

Wondering if you’ll have a ticklish pedicure experience? Some do. This is a common question first time “pedicurees” normally ask. However, there is no cut and dry answer. It really depends on you.

There are certainly aspects of a pedicure that can get pretty ticklish for almost anyone; one aspect in particular being the mechanical exfoliation process. With mechanical exfoliation, your feet are rubbed or scrubbed with a mechanical tool usually either a loofah sponge, foot file or a pumice stone. It can very well get ticklish when they have to scrub the soles, a normal place for hard, tough skin build up.

Some people think that the harder your soles, the less ticklish you are. Contrary to this belief, I have met people with hard soles who were very ticklish, ticklish to even a foot massage and I’ve met people with relatively soft soles in comparison who actually got pleasure from fingernails being run up and down over the soles of their feet! Others can’t even stand it when their toes are manipulated in any way. It really boils down to the individual.

If you are planning on going to a salon, it may be beneficial to test some of the procedures on yourself at home first to see if you can stand them. Have a look at our pedicure guide for the steps involved. You may get a false sense of your ticklish threshold though, because you’ll likely only do what you can stand.

If this is really eating at you, when you make that trip, just let the person who is doing the pedicure know that you are ticklish before hand and just how ticklish you are. Also don’t be afraid to let the pedicurist know that something is ticklish. You are the client and you should be satisfied. Although your squirming will most likely tip them off that you are having a rather ticklish pedicure experience!

Once you alert them, they will keep this in mind and adjust accordingly. Trust me, you aren’t the only ticklish person to ever walk through their doors and you won’t be the last. They should know how to deal with such situations.

You may get some comfort out of doing the pedicure yourself though, but if there are some steps that you can’t perform due to ticklishness, this may limit the effectiveness of the pedicure. With someone else performing it, they won’t have the same apprehensions as you and will just get the job done. If you're interested, our pedicure guide shows you how.

Some have suggested ways to get over ticklishness like rubbing cinnamon over the ticklish area or concentrating on sad thoughts and ignoring that you are being tickled. Surely, ignoring is a lot easier said than done! Some people have found relief by relaxation but for others relaxation makes the problem worse. You’ll have to experiment to find what works for you.

The hard truth is that if you’re ticklish, some aspects you may just have to be brave about and sit through, especially if your feet are in need of a pedicure. Scientists have actually studied the act of tickling and why it makes some people laugh. According to the most prevailing theory, tickling is like a mock attack. The tickler is physically saying, "I'm attacking you; no, just kidding." The process of tickling is akin to joking. Take my favorite Rodney Dangerfield joke: "The other day I went to the doctor. He said he needed a semen sample, a urine sample, and a stool sample. So I gave him my underwear and left." He's just kidding, (I think. I can just picture...no, I don't want to go there.) and it makes us laugh.

One night I was watching the Howard Stern Show on E network. I don't agree with his degrading attitude toward women. His criticism of the imperfections of women's bodies irritates me, and his promotion of unnecessary cosmetic surgery (primarily breast implants) is irresponsible because women die having plastic surgery. But as Jeff Foxworthy would say, "I was drinking beer, and I wanted to see something naked."

His guest was Yaqi, the professional tickler. I'm not going to give his website, but it can easily be found using the google search engine. Yaqi is a creepy, prematurely graying man who makes a living selling videos of him tickling women, and women tickling him. He brought along two women clad in their underwear, and they were tied down and tickled. One of the models, they could barely make smile, but the other one was so ticklish that her frantic thrashing broke the ropes that held her wrists down.

On another episode Mr. Stern invited Pamela Anderson and Natalie Raitano from the television series, VIP to a foot tickling session. Ms. Anderson offered to tickle the men on the show, but none were brave enough to submit. As a ticklee, Ms. Anderson is a squealer, but Natalie Raitano proved to be genuinely ticklish.

The episode with tickling must have boosted ratings because shortly after this, the tickle chair along with robo spank became regular fixtures on his show. The robo spank is a mechanically swinging wooden board. Mr. Stern has women bend over and their nude posteriors are struck with it. One model said it hurt like a mother lover.

A whole parade of women on the fringes of stardom have suffered the torments of Mr. Stern's tickle chair which has restraints attached to it. Nikki Ziering (a Price is Right model and actress from Austin Powers movies), Jesse Jane (a porn star), Maria Manounas (a journalist and actress), and even Jennifer McCarthy (famous Playboy model) have all been rendered into helpless humiliation in Mr. Stern's tickle chair. When Mr. Stern tickled Ms. McCarthy she lost control and urinated into her blue jeans. From now until the end of civilization as we know it, people can see photos on the internet of Ms. McCarthy's most embarrassing moment.

I've never seen women tickling men on the Howard Stern Show, but while researching this article I discovered Xana, the tickle torturer, a bosomy blonde who reportedly has appeared on his show. Apparently, she must tour the country tickling her tied down boyfriend in public.

Believe it or not--there is money to be made in the specialized field of tickling.

WHY ARE WE TICKLISH

Being ticklish is a complicated trait rooted in our evolutionary past. Two searches, "physiology + ticklish" and "why are we ticklish," turned up a number of articles that helped us understand this touchy, feely human feature.
Scientists suggest that being ticklish is our defense against creepy crawlies like spiders and bugs, a physiological response alerting us to a specific type of threat. That is why vulnerable parts of our bodies -- feet, chest, and armpits, are among the most ticklish.

While there is no question that being ticklish is neurological, scientists contend that it is also learned. One theory sees ticklishness as a personality-based response to perceived attack. Antsy folks may laugh uncontrollably at the lightest touch, or even without being touched at all, while folks made of sterner stuff won't budge during more aggressive tickle attacks.

If you close your eyes and try to remain calm while you are tickled, you can decrease panic, reduce giggles, and dull sensation. And, no matter how hard you try, it is nearly impossible to tickle yourself.

Tickling satisfies our human need to touch. Robert R. Provine, a professor of neuroscience and author of Quest for Laughter, sees the tickle as a form of communication between friends, family, and lovers, playing a key role in the evolution of social and sexual behavior. He points to chimps tickling each other during play, parents tickling little kids, and lovers tickling each other affectionately.

"If you think the social component is not important," Provine says, "Try tickling a stranger."
